I wonder the reason of the low ranking this show has in MAL. This series is pretty solid,
IMHO one of the best of this season. The characters are well designed, the art and animation is great. The story is simple, but cool enough. There is action, humor, a nice progression and evolution of the characters. And despite to be a classic, we don't have that much youkai anime per season.

best to never look at mals ratings or any critic site with voting for that matter, they tend to be cesspools of bandwagonism.

mal ratings are the definition of bias. fanboys will overthrow popular anime so theirs remains at the top. This is why I prefer anilist over mal.

lol, don't ever look at MAL. It's ratings are biased and you'll pretty much end up skipping good series because of it.

yeah like 6.7 that puts it with the unwatchable copy paste isekai and other horrendous anime
and those copy paste isekai even get allot more attention

Because the fights have very little emotional impact.
It's decent, but not that good. There is no real build up or tension. Multiple fights begin and end in a single episode so I find myself not really all that invested in it. Even 2 gigantic fortress and mountain sized enemies fighting which should have been spectacular in this episode was over from a single boring strike. The protagonists are just pulling powers out of their asses too. (or in Jinka's case, his head.) Something like Naruto's tailed beast transformation raising in tails was far more impactful than Jinka's. They are not even in the same league. The only real emotional scene so far was Shakugan sacrificing herself to save the baby being born.
I like this anime, but it's just mid as fuck so far. It's a longer running anime too, so there is no reason for them to rush it like this.

Of course I was not expecting this series to have a super high score, but 6.7 is pretty low for MAL, and a lot of less quality anime reach it easily. Even if I can agree with some of your points, what surprised me is that I don't feel it's series the average anime watcher can't enjoy it. Even Akuyaku Reijou Level 99 or Mato Seihei no Slave got a higher score. As @Anon0o0 commented, maybe the genre makes people rate it low instead to just move to another one that matches their current tastes. Or they just got higher expectations and spitefully under-rate it.

I think we both know why Mato Seihei no Slave got a higher rating. ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)
I don't take too much stock in MAL ratings. I would rather look for recommendations from friends or even Anitubers with similar tastes and then see if I like it from the first few episodes. I have weird tastes though. I can love or hate an anime just based on the art style or a character alone even if the anime is very good by most peoples standards. I don't even like One Piece or Jojo at all because of the awful character designs. lol

Sadly we know it lmao. But it's kinda sad. I just use the MAL ratings as reference. If something goes under 6 the chances to be good are pretty low. But at the end it doesn't condition my decision to watch or not to watch a series. I like to search from time to time for underrated anime. Of course, for new ones I don't care, I just jump in almost everything and try the first episode.

Probably because this anime have so many episodes it take awhile for the story to get going and everyone is so used to the 12 episode anime they jump the gun on rating this show.

Funny how it's going to be a longer anime yet it still feels rushed as hell compared to 12 episodes of say Re:Zero or Mushoku Tensei.

What are the 9 directions?

it's related to feng shui. the standard compass has 4 cardinal directions, which are associated with 4 seasons and 4 elements. in the east the centre is counted as the 5th direction, hence 5 seasons and 5 elements (earth, water, wood, fire, metal).
then in addition to the 4 cardinal directions (N, E, S, W) there are 4 intermediate directions (NE, SE, SW, NW), which adds up to 8. this corresponds with the chinese 8 trigrams.
combining the 5 directions with the 4 intermediate directions makes 9. according to the 8 trigrams the additional 4 attributes are thunder, lake, mountain, and sky.

Honestly, Jingka's battle really lacked in action, compared to Shinsuke's battle. Shinsuke really went at it with his opponent in one of those really intense battles to the death! :))))

This was confirmed by the author when the anime was announced. It's a total of 37 episodes that adapt the entire manga, although we don't know if it's consecutive. There's a chance after next week's episode that rest comes later on.
